Novena to Jesus the Black Nazarene

The Manner

Of Conducting the Novena In Honor  of  Our Lord Jesus Nazarene

This manual of prayers and devotions in honor of Jesus Nazarene should be of great help to His devotees. A novena may be made during nine consecutive Fridays or nine consecutive days any time of the year. This purpose of such special devotion is to Glorify God, to sanctify necessary for own temporal and eternal welfare.

But, the most recommended period for making such novena is during nine consecutive Fridays, starting with “Septuagesima Sunday” until “Viernes Dolores” (Friday before Palm Sunday)

Let us put all our trust in the goodness and our mercy of God who will reward us for our perseverance. Jesus Nazarene will not abandon those who come to Him. It is however, earnestly recommended that the devotees go to Confession and receive Holy Communion at least once during the novena.

Novena to Jesus of Nazareth

(To make this Novena, if possible, recite the following prayers in a Church, or before an image of Jesus of Nazareth. Try to go to at least one Confession and frequent communion during the course of nine consecutive days or each day if done on nine consecutive Fridays.)

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION

imagesO Jesus Christ, my Lord, true God, and true Man, my great Redeemer; with the sublime love which You did profess for humankind, and for which You did suffer humiliations and experience all sorts of trials and tribulations since Your capture by the soldiers led by Judas Iscariot, and during Your painful journey to Calvary; walking with a heavy cross on Your shoulders, as a penitent creature of God, I should appreciate Your supreme sacrifice; Your death on the cross to redeem the world and hereby promise to love You ever more.

Referring to You, St. John said, “Greater love has no man than this that He lay down His life for His friends.”

In as much as I love you above all things, I repent with all my heart and soul for having committed sins against You. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your Grace to sin no more and to avoid the occasions of sin. So help me, I beseech You Jesus Christ, to do penance, and give me courage to follow You in Your dolorous way of the Cross.

First Day or First Friday

Jesus Christ was sentenced to death. After having been scourged and crowned with thorns, He was unjustly condemned by Pontius Pilate to die on the cross

Meditation

I was my sins that condemned You of this sorrowful journey to assist my soul in its journey towards eternity. I adore You wholeheartedly. Never permit me to be separated from You again, but please grant that I may love You always.

Resolution for the Day

From this day on, I will try to amend my life to the smallest things that keep me from worshipping and serving God more faithfully

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, my sins condemned You to die on the cross. O Lord, whose overflowing charity for humanity is requited but forgetfulness and negligence, I kneel before Your altar with the desire to make up by a special homage. I am begging Your Pardon for having offended you and for having been unfaithful to You. By this Novena, may I have Your inspiration, and as I pledge to love You with all my whole heart, teach me to love You above all things. To You I desire to consecrate, all my thoughts, words, actions, and sufferings;  and I beseech You to enlighten my understanding, inflame my will, purify my body, and sanctify my soul.

images2CONCLUDING PRAYER

O Almighty God, who have appointed Your only begotten Son the Savior of the World; many times I have improperly abandoned You, but after duly repenting for having offended You, now on my knees I come to offer You to say that I adore You with all fervor and devotion. So please forgive me for my sins and omissions; and grant me grace, I beseech You, my omnipotent God, so that I may enjoy the blessing and Glory of Heaven where Your Son Jesus live and reign with You in unity of the Holy spirit, world without end. Amen

(Say Three Hail Mary’s for the intention of this novena)

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with you, among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER
10250275_10202513801619844_1437538105248612033_n

O MY SOUL, GREAT TRUTH; YOUR SALVATION MUST BE A MOST IMPORTANT AFFAIR; IF THE SON OF GOD HAD TO DIE TO THE CROSS FOR IT; AND IF THE MOST INNOCENT JESUS WAS THUS SCOURGED FOR THE SINS OF OTHERS, WHAT WILL BE THE PUNISHMENT IN HELL FOR OUR SIN, SO NUMEROUS AND COMMITTED WITH MALICE? O JESUS CRUCIFIED, BE MY SALVATION.

O MARY, MOTHER OF THE DIVINE REDEEMER, HOW GREAT IS THE GOODNESS OF JESUS TOWARS US, AND WE UNGRATEFUL FOR SUCH GOODNESS HAVE NOT ONLY SHOWN HIM LITTLE LOVE IN RETURN, BUT HAVE ALSO OFTEN TIME REOPENED HIS WOUNDS. PRAY FOR US THAT WE MAY DESPISE SUCH INGRATITUDE. OUR DEAREST MOTHER MARY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS, HELP ME TO KEEP MY RESOLUTIONS I HAVE MADE DURING THIS MEDITATION; HELP US TO LIVE AS GOOD AND FAITHFUL CATHOLICS, AS A DEVOUR CHILD OF YOU, HELP ME TO AVOID OFFENDING YOU DIVINE SON, HELP ME TO HAVE A HAPPY DEATH; HELP ME OH MARY, TO SAVE MY SOUL SO THAT I MAY BE HAPPY WITH JESUS CHRIST FOREVER. AMEN.

NOTE: Follow the proceeding order of the prayer for the Second Day/Friday or for the Third Day or Friday, etc. for this novena takes the place of that for the First as the cause may be.

 Second Day or Second Friday

At the trial, Jesus, the innocent savior, was declared guilty; and death by crucifixion was the penalty meted out to Him. Crowned with thorns, and subjected to the cruelty of unjust men; He now went through sufferings in the difficult journey with a heavy cross on His shoulders.

Jesus Christ bore all the hardships in this journey with the cross, offered for us to His Father the death He was about to face.

Meditation

We must learn to follow His example of sacrifices by accompanying Him in His journey and take up the cross to follow Him and make Him our model. Jesus said Himself, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” We must bear in mind and take into heat the meaning of His words.

 Resolution for the Day

On this day, I promise to make sacrifice for Jesus of Nazareth; I will try to be worthy of being one of His disciples and followers.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, I am most willing to accept the cross which You wishes me to carry. I beg help from You to serve You faithfully and I must bear in mind that through Your Cross, salvation of mankind was brought about.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Third Day or Third Friday

21946_1285653854990_8041738_nJesus fell under His Cross; still, He had no alternative but to continue His journey. He was then treated with more cruelty than a slave. He was crowned with thorns whose pains He suffered and felt through His smallest veins, His flesh was even torn by the scourges. He lost a great quantity of His precious blood which weakened Him; coupled with inhumanity of the violent soldiers that He could hardly walk, thereby causing Him to fall several times in His journey.

Meditation

It was not the weight of the Cross nor the pain of the thorns but our sins that made You suffer so much torment. You were not permitted to rest even for a single moment. The brutal soldiers did not get tired of whipping and striking You. They perpetrated cruelties, indignities, and injustices, in response to Your preaching and compliance with Your mission of saving humanity. You did live, love mankind, and suffered for the sinners. We in turn should express sorrow for your sufferings, and at the same time show gratitude to You for Your goodness, not only in words but especially in deeds.

O merciful Jesus, help us to ponder always on Your Passion to overcome temptations, and thus be reminded to love You above all things.

 Resolution for the Day

Recalling Your fall beneath the Cross, if and when I fall into sin, I’ll try to rise at once and be restored to grace through the sacrament of confession.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, I am heartily Sorry for my sins and of Your favors bestowed me although unmerited. I kneel before Your altar, willing to repair by an act of homage, and fervently hope for Your grace and aid, grant me strength. I beseech You Jesus, to conquer my weaknesses so that I may not forget Yu and thus avoid the commission of sins.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Fourth Day or Fourth Friday

Jesus Christ met His afflicted and sorrowful mother in His journey. As they looked at each other, each of them felt the pains within their hearts which they could not express in words, as if the arrows and daggers were plunged into their chest; wounding their hearts which loved each other dearly and tenderly. She followed Him in His dolorous journey.

Meditation3293184239_a372cec210

Imagine the feelings of the Blessed Mother and her Son in those moments, here a mother meeting her son in a pitiful condition; disfigured, emaciated, weakened, almost at the brink of agony; with blood oozing from His heart and body. Lugubrious, the Virgin Mother met Jesus in such state. Both Mother and Son experienced inconsolable sorrow. And Jesus was on His way to Calvary to save mankind.

 Resolution for the Day

I hereby resolve to ask the Good Lord for religious fervor through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of Jesus, as a foundation of mercy, she helps sinners.

Prayer

Blessed Mother, Mary most holy, our model of virtues, deign to receive the voluntary offering we make of this novena; keep us faithful unto death in our love and duty to our Lord so that we may be worthy of the glory of heaven, that through your intercession, we may enjoy eternal life.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Fifth Day or Fifth Friday

Jesus Christ was helped by Cyrene. He got tired and was about to collapse that He could not rise any longer and much less walk when Cyrenian helped Jesus to carry His cross. He assisted the Lord and walked behind Him and followed. The cross was heavy that made gashes on the Lord’s shoulders, but He had to carry the heave instrument of torture. He should pay the cost for redeeming mankind.

Jesus was on the point of expiring and might die on His way when Simon was picked to assist Him.

Meditation

To run to the aid of Jesus Christ in ‘carrying His cross was a great honor, for it was part in the salvation of mankind. This role of Simon was very important. We ourselves can do this part in many ways. Whenever we commit grave sins, we can rise and reform immediately; when temptation come to us, we can accept the challenge by taking control of ourselves and courageously fighting them.

Resolution for the Day

More than a Simon Cyrene, I promise to help You carry the Cross my Lord Jesus and also help my fellowmen. So help me, I beseech You, to keep my resolutions and not to give up trying, even I break any of them sometimes.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, give me grace at least to accompany You on the way to Calvary and make me worthy to bear Your cross of adversities in order that by doing so. I am led to everlasting life and happiness. Help me to feel sorry for my sins, increase my love for You, my Redeemer, who art infinitely good to me; in order not to forget You in all my undertakings.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Sixth Day or Sixth Friday

501d4a69160ddc9d8a3bcb90fce7c2beMost of the spectators overlooked the role played by Simon of Cyrene on the difficult journey of Jesus Christ. A woman namedVeronica was not one of them. Seeing that Jesus was exhausted, and bathed in sweat and blood, she rushed through the crowed and wiped His faced with a towel. He rewarded her by leaving the exact print of His face on the towel she had on her hands. The face could not be seen in the exact replica of our Lord’s. And the marks of hardships and sufferings were reproduced on the said towel.

Meditation

We must consider how our sins made the sacred face of the Lord disfigured. It was our sins that made Him suffer much on His dangerous and difficult journey to Calvary. Hence, we must reform, we should repent, and avoid the least of sins.

 Resolution for the Day

Bearing in mind the wonderful deed of Veronica, I promise to repent for my sins through confession and never to offend You again and avoid all occasions sins. Likewise, I promise to help alleviate the sufferings of my fellowmen.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, grant me grace to clean my soul from all defilements and imprint deep in my heart and mind the exact image of Your Holy sufferings. Jesus give me courage never to commit sins against You and fill my soul with fortitude and grant me joy and peace. Make me love You always and comply cheerfully with Gods will in all things.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Seventh Day or Seventh Friday

Jesus Christ continued His painful journey. He fell again on the way. His fall aggravated the pains of parts of His body. Seeing Him inresize such pitiable state, a group of women wept with compassion for His nearing death. But Jesus comforted them with His words, saying “daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but for yourselves and for your children.” He uttered these words, forgetting the fatal approaching hour and thinking only of the welfare of these women and their children.

Meditation

These meaningful and thoughtful words that Jesus spoke before the crowd gave us the lesson that being charitable to other people pleases God. This must be put into action to prove our loyalty and we must show our fidelity to the Divine Savior and prove ourselves really devoted to God.

Resolution for the Day

On this day, I’ll try to be kind in words and actions towards my neighbors and other people.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, I have often promise to You to be faithful but I have broken my vows and exceedingly sinned in thought, words, and deeds. Move my heart, I beseech You, so that I may sincerely repent for all evil action and that, much as to commit them again. May the Lord Almighty God grant me pardon, absolution and remission of all sins with the help of Your grace.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Eight Day or Eight Friday

Jesus Christ, after a long difficult journey reached the scene wherein He would be executed; the place where He would shed the last drop of His precious blood. Jesus, innocent as He was, would meet His death; His sufferings and agony would be capped by death for the sake of mankind. His most sacred and Holy Body was exposed after the brutal soldiers has stripped His clothes. All His pains and sufferings were in public view; His Sacred Body was numbed by blows of violent men; His skin are bruised and sweat of blood covered His flesh.

Meditation

Because of our sins, Jesus Christ willingly met death. This must be a shame on our part. To the smallest vein of our body, we should have felt the pains undergone by Jesus for our sake.

Resolution for the Day

I promise, O Innocent and Spotless Lamb of God, to avoid in every way the smallest of sins in appreciation for Your love for humankind.

Prayer

O Jesus Christ, It was only responsibility that cause You to suffer a long difficult journey to meet Your death, yet I have ignored never to commit sins against You. I am determined to amend my life. My Jesus, by merits of the torments You have suffered, help me to divest myself of all sinful mundane desires, in order that I may place all my love in You, who are infinitely good and worthy of my love. I sincerely repent for having offended You. Never permit me to be drifted away from You, and grant that I may love You Always.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)

Ninth Day or Ninth Friday

At last, Jesus Christ reach the end of the painful journey to Calvary. The brutal soldiers stretch Him on the Cross. They nailed His hands and feet. His blood flowed to the ground. He died with anguish on the gibber. Thus, Christ offered to His Father of His death for the salvation of mankind.

15049967_10209223118708578_612695529_n

Meditation

Let us go back to the physical pains and sufferings of Jesus Christ before and during His dolorous journey (Via Crucis) to Calvary. As we call them to mind, let us inquire why He should have allowed maltreatment by the brutal soldiers, and suffered so much torment from their hands, including His exposure to heat of the mid-day sun for several hours? Why?

In the meantime, Christ uttered these words the Cross, before expiring: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.

Resolution for the Day

On this day, I will kneel before my Crucified Savior and request Him to keep me always under His care. On my part, I will promise to serve Him faithfully and comply with the Ten Commandments

Prayer

O Jesus Crist, engrave in my heart the lesson and the things that I need most for my life that will please You always. May the Crucifix by my guide in my daily task and keep myself close to it to remind me of Your sufferings and let it be my preacher, teacher, and friend, to avoid the commission of sins. Grant me grace to love and serve You always to the last breath of my life. Help me keep my vow never to offend You again.

(Recite the Litany and Concluding Prayer with the Hail Mary and the Closing Payer)
